Studio Practices

How do we teach studio practices?  I've realized that I can teach technical skills and art appreciation but I'm not sure that teaching someone to "be" an artist is an option.  I am introducing some activities with my studio students to consider artistic process and what type of commitment is required to be successful in the arts.

We are starting with a comparison of the work of Ethan Tennier-Stuart.  He is currently more focused on design but the progression of his work has been highly publicized on the Internet.  His work provides a great visual transition as someone improves their technique.

I rarely do "handouts" but this warmup is a printout that can be broken into 2-4 days.  I'm going to focus on comparing artwork and wait until the end to identify the work as a single person's.  I'm hoping this is a good opportunity to discuss "how" someone becomes a technically proficient artist.
